In the course of audit, it was discovered in payment vouchers raised and posted in 2019, that a total of ten million, two hundred and fifty three thousand, seven hundred and sixty two naira, eighty four kobo (N10,253,762.84) was deducted as 1% tax liability charge in almost all the UBE 2015 and 2016 projects executed. These deductions were made at source. The authority letter or circular backing such act were not sighted. The alleged tax deductions were not in tax register, no record or trace of remittances to appropriate tax authorities was found.
The management was therefore requested to as a matter of urgency, provide for the Auditor-General’s confirmations and/or further actions, the authority for the above deductions and evidence of their emittances to the relevant tax authorities. Otherwise, they should account for the total sum of N10,253,762.84 deducted from sundry contractual obligations.
